Balance Burnout

Ban Business Burnout

Having your own business tends to feel like you’re working non-stop. That’s because even when you’re home at night watching TV or taking a walk in the park, it’s hard to switch off from your To Do list. And, if you employ staff too, you’ll feel a huge responsibility for them. It can all lead to too much stress and will obviously damage your health over time. So what can you do?
Well, start putting some of the following into action and you’ll discover you’ve more energy than you’ve had in months. You’ll probably be able to make better decisions too and it won’t be so difficult to fall asleep. And talking of sleep:

Maintain a regular bed time

Let your body know when it’s time to drop-off. Sitting up late finishing off a report and not getting to bed until 4am can set your body clock off-course for the rest of the week if you usually head for bed before midnight. Before you go to bed do something just for you such as read a great book or sit and cuddle the cat. In other words, don’t think about work.

Get a regular morning routine going

Your mornings are important. That’s when you set yourself up for the rest of the day. Routine helps here too. Try to have your breakfast at the same time every morning (preferably a veg smoothie or porridge ie something healthy and sustaining). Get up earlier to spend some time alone doing something your love such as inspecting the garden or watching the birds at the feeder.

Establish an evening routine

Evenings are a good time to set up a routine too. That means switching off email, the computer and even the TV for a set period and fully focusing on what you want to do, such as learning a language, crocheting, dancing, or even spending some time out with your dog or cat. The main point being that it’s time dedicated to doing your own personal stuff. This will help you switch off and start afresh the following morning.

Empower yourself with exercise

Exercise doesn’t just relax us but also makes us feel happier and more confident. You don’t have to go to the gym daily to reap the benefits of regular exercise. A 30 minute walk to work through the park or along a river bank will do the trick as will a lunchtime swim three times a week.

Find a fabulous past time

Make sure it’s completely unrelated to work and is, in fact, the opposite of what you do most of the week. So, if you spend a lot of time with figures take up a creative, arty type past time. If your business is already craft related then think about doing quizzes to keep the old grey matter in shape.

Learn to meditate

The beauty of meditation is that it doesn’t just allow you to ‘switch off’ your thoughts – it can also re-energise your brain. Problems with clients or suppliers will seem easier to solve and you’ll be a nicer person to be around. If meditation isn’t your thing consider Tai Chi, Pilates or Yoga.

Eat more fruit and veg

‘Real’ foods ie those which are unprocessed, such as fruit and vegetables, can make us feel calmer and far more nourished than a diet of artificial stimulants. You’ll also have the added bonus of better skin and a narrower waistline. Vegetable smoothies are a great start to the day in this respect.

Do some of the above for even just a week and you’ll start to reap the rewards.
