Spicy broad bean paste

Broad beans also known as Fava or Faba beans are one of the oldest cultivated beans in the world and are grown all around the world.  With this in mind I grew broad beans in my garden this year  for the first time because I figured that if people had been growing them for thousands of years they must be pretty easy for a beginner gardener like me.

I planted a few of the seeds (dried beans) and was thrilled to watch them grow. There haven’t been too many of them but there was enough to make this delicious spicy broad bean paste.

I’m so going  to plant some more for next year .

Instructions
  1. Soak the beans in boiling water until the shells become soft. Then peel the broad beans and discard the outer shell.
  2. Chop the garlic and chillies.
  3. Sauté the garlic in olive oil on a medium heat for 1-2 minutes. Add the chillies and fry with the garlic for a minute or so stirring all the time.
  4. Finally add the broad beans and stir-fry it with garlic and chillies for 3-5 minutes until they are soft Add thyme, marjoram, salt and pepper and mix well.
  5. Transfer the bean mix into a bowl and mash into a puree. If you want it to be creamy and smooth, you can add some vegan butter. I personally prefer it to be a bit crunchy but it all depends on your personal preference.
  6. Serve with toasted bread 🙂 Enjoy!
