Relieve Stress and Improve Your Well-Being with Adaptogens

Stress, fatigue, anxiety – in our busy lives these words can feel all too prevalent. We reach for the extra shot of coffee or the quick gratification of a sugary laden snack knowing that in the long run it’s not going to really help. But in that moment it’s a helping hand and if we can just power on through till the end of the working day it’ll all be good, right?

The problem is, they don’t actually work. Sugar and caffeine do offer a quick lift, but the crash is never far behind – so it’s back to Starbucks, Costa or wherever to start the cycle again. Your day turns into a rollercoaster ride of highs and lows, from which you can’t see an escape and you don’t know what your next move should be.

Fortunately, there are healthier ways to get through the day – and one of my favorites is with “adaptogens,” these are special herbs that help your body adapt to stress and resist fatigue .

Adapt a what now?

Adaptogens, they are a unique group of herbal ingredients used to improve the health of your adrenal system, which is in charge of managing your body’s hormonal response to stress. They also help enhance the body’s ability to cope with anxiety and fight fatigue- amazing right?! They are called adaptogens because of their unique ability to “adapt” their function according to your body’s specific needs. Although the effects may initially be subtle and take time to make themselves felt, they are most definitely real. In short, adaptogens are amazing!

Ok so….Which ones should I be using?

There are many different types of Adaptogens but here are my top 7 that I would recommend you research:

Siberian Ginseng – This is known to strengthen your whole system it can help fight colds, flu, fatigue and viral infections. SIberian Ginseng also has the ability to help your liver detox, and to alleviate menstrual problems and menopausal symptoms. Siberian ginseng basically gives your body a massive boost of energy and helps the body deal with it’s capacity to handle stress, it is suitable for children and pregnant/lactating women and is also safer than Korean Ginseng, which should be used under a GP supervision.

Ashwagandha – Ashwagandha is THE tonic for the 21st century lifestyle, it is also known as Indian Ginseng and is used extensively in Ayurvedic medicine. Ashwagandha is rejuvenating and strengthening to the nervous system, and is excellent for stress induced disorders such as Insomnia, anxiety and neurosis. It helps you adapt to stress that cannot be avoided, whilst strengthening and calming the mind and body and soul. It is an incredibly grounding adaptogen.

Astralagus – The Chinese have used astragalus traditionally to encourage good health and fight stress. Its active compound, called TAT2, protects against aging, supports detoxification, and is nutrition for the kidneys. Astragalus is also well known as an immune booster and fighter of the common cold. It can fight viral and bacterial infections and strengthen the whole body system. It is a master healer with anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties.

Schisandra – This amazing adaptogen supports the nervous system. The Chinese have long considered Schisandra ideal for lack of energy and for nervous exhaustion from stress. Among the ailments it is used to treat are night sweats, asthma, cough, and insomnia.

Reishi– Reishi is a herbal mushroom known to have miraculous health benefits. It is non-toxic and can be taken regularly, and in doing so it can restore the body to its natural state, enabling all organs to function normally. It is a fabulous anti inflammatory and a super immune booster too.

Rhodiola– Rhodiola is a great defender of the body and protects your general health and wellbeing to a massive degree. Rhodiola has anti-stress and fatigue-fighting properties which make it one of the most popular adaptogens. Due to its ability to supply blood to the brain many people use Rhodiola during times of heavy mental stress. This makes it a very popular product for those in stressful jobs and those studying and taking exams.

Cordyceps– Cordyceps are one of the most popular adaptogens, this is because they strengthen the adrenal glands, increase sexual vitality, lower blood pressure and improve blood circulation. Cordyceps are also able to increase your immune system, improve energy, appetite, stamina, endurance and sleeping patterns. In short they are simply fantastic!

Please remember if you do decide that you would like to start enhancing your wellbeing that adaptogens are not simply the same as just taking a multivitamin. Each person will have a different response and it’s about finding the right combination that works for you and your lifestyle.
